[What is New TOEFL Test?]

TOEFL, the abbreviation of Test of English as a Foreign Language, is developed by the American Educational Testing Service, (ETS) and designed to measure the ability for the trainees whose mother tongue is not English to understand and apply English language on campus life and study. The American ETS announced in February 2005 that the new type of test would be adapted world-wide starting from September 2005. The new TOEFL test is computerized test based on Internet, or Internet Based Test for short. The new form of test is composed of four parts in terms of its testing structure. It is used to measure students’ four items of listening, reading, writing and speaking.

What is the Test Content of the New TOEFL?

u      Reading part: 3 essays, 11—13 questions, 60 minutes. Question Types include: question with illustrations, question summarizing paragraphs, question with phrasing exchange, question with words and phrases, question with demonstrative pronoun, question simplifying sentences, question inserting paragraphs and question with factual information. The trainees could use the foundation of “re-checking” to find out at once those questions not answered yet, there is no need to check again from the beginning.

u      Listening part: 2 dialogues and 4 paragraphs of speeches, for each dialogue there are 5 questions thereafter. Each paragraph is matched with 6 questions. The testing time is around 40 minutes.

u      Speaking part: 6 questions, 15 minutes. The first 2 questions are to be answered separately. To answer the 3rd and 4th questions, trainees shall read a paragraph and then listen to one paragraph related to what you read. The trainees answer the questions according to the requirements. Normally one question is situational and another one is academic. The 5th and 6th questions are designed for trainees to answer the questions based on the listening material in the test. The listening material could be a dialogue or a speech. The trainees could make notes to help with their answers during their listening period.  

u      Writing part: It includes two questions for writing separately and writing after reading and listening. The separate writing is 30 minutes, in which trainees could state, explain and support one specific point in accordance with their own knowledge, experience. For the writing based on reading and listening, the trainees read an academic speech, in which there are 5 minutes for reading before it disappears. By this time the trainees shall listen to about 1.5 minute speeches. Nevertheless the trainees could refer the materials their just listened to while they are writing.
